Journalism in the age of Butter

It is really inspirational to see some of my friends who are doing a course on journalism. They opted for studying journalism coz they really wanted to bring change to this society. They have passion and enthusiasm and a dream to make changes happen through their writing and they really feel very strongly about it.

Its just i dont how long their flame is gonna last.

Today, journalism has become both wider in its reach and narrower in the content. More and more channels are coming up but that hasnt demoralized print media. There are more number of newspapers now and it could have been a good sign but unfortunately, Media which could have been used to expose and control those "bad people" of society is being used by those very persons against each other.

Almost all news channels that we see on TV are funded by large companies, which make sure that their company's name isnt in the limelights for bad reasons, and TV channels are forced to make news about or investigate for tiny-tiny shortcomings that the opponents might have.

Its not at all easy to survive fighting govt. And media understands that so they telecast only news that is "pre-approved" by the govt. agencies. News is created these days. Things which were just daily happenings in society before the new age media arrived, are now Breaking News, whether its children falling in pits or a husband beaten by his wife. People record these things on their mobiles and they are given TV sets by a news channel. Horrible.

In my city only, Bhopal, there are 2 major Hindi newspapers. In one, BJP govt. is doing a great job and other, the govt. has done nothing and daily new scandels creep up. Once in a while, there is change in matter that shows that govt officials havent "cooperated", but thats just too rare.

Today, people just dont need bread on their table, they need butter too. Every penny u earn is less than what u could have earned. Media is all about being powerful and making money today and that too in the quickest time possible, so how can we expect morality and responsibility out of it. Morality is like a water bubble, so vulnerable that it breaks with a slight touch of money.
